Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco announced that the tragic incident involving Jeff Sperbeck, a close friend and business partner of NFL legend John Elway, appears to be an accident with no foul play involved. The sheriff confirmed that the investigation into the incident is nearing completion and could wrap up as soon as this weekend.
On April 26, around 6:50 p.m., Sperbeck fell from a moving golf cart while in the Madison Club community in La Quinta, California. He hit his head during the fall and was later pronounced dead at Desert Regional Medical Center early on April 30. The 62-year-old resident of San Clemente was standing in the back of the cart, which was designed for two to four passengers, but had five people on board at the time, including Elway, their wives, and another unidentified individual.
Sheriff Bianco did not confirm whether Elway was driving the cart but mentioned that the driver does not seem to be at fault. There is also no indication that alcohol played a role in the incident. Bianco stated, "There doesn’t appear to be any cause other than, for whatever reason, he fell off."
Following the news of Sperbeck’s death, Elway expressed his deep sorrow in a statement, saying he is "absolutely devastated and heartbroken." He described Sperbeck as someone who brought loyalty, wisdom, and friendship into his life and the lives of many others.
Sperbeck had a long career as an agent and business advisor, representing over 100 NFL players, including Elway since 1990. The two later co-founded 7Cellars winery, where Sperbeck served as the chief executive.
Elway, a standout player at Granada Hills High and Stanford University, played 16 seasons with the Denver Broncos. He was named league MVP in 1987 and led the team to two Super Bowl victories in 1997 and 1998, along with three additional Super Bowl appearances. After his playing career, he served as the Broncos’ general manager and executive vice president of football operations, helping the team secure another Super Bowl win in 2016. He was a consultant for the Broncos until his contract expired in 2023.
