Sheriff: No Evidence of Fault by John Elway or Others in Jeff Sperbecks Death

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco has reported that the recent golf cart incident involving Jeff Sperbeck, a close friend and business partner of NFL legend John Elway, appears to be a tragic accident with no signs of foul play. Sperbeck, 62, fell from a moving golf cart in the Madison Club community of La Quinta, California, on April 26 around 6:50 p.m. He suffered a head injury and was pronounced dead at Desert Regional Medical Center early on April 30.

According to Sheriff Bianco, Sperbeck was standing in the back of the golf cart when he fell off. At the time, there were five people in the cart, including Elway and their wives. The sheriff noted that the cart was designed for two or four passengers, which raises questions about safety given the number of occupants. While there were reports suggesting that Elway was driving, the sheriff did not confirm this and stated that the driver does not seem to be at fault. There is also no indication that alcohol played a role in the incident.

Bianco emphasized that the investigation is nearly complete and is expected to conclude soon. He expressed that there is no evidence suggesting anything other than a tragic accident. “There doesn’t appear to be any cause other than, for whatever reason, he fell off,” Bianco said.

Elway expressed his deep sorrow over Sperbeck’s death in a statement, describing himself as “absolutely devastated and heartbroken.” He highlighted the profound impact Sperbeck had on his life, noting the loyalty, wisdom, and friendship he provided.

Sperbeck had a successful career as an agent and business advisor, representing over 100 NFL players, including Elway since 1990. Together, they founded the 7Cellars winery, where Sperbeck served as CEO. Elway, a Hall of Fame quarterback, played 16 seasons with the Denver Broncos and has been a key figure in the NFL, both as a player and later as a general manager.

This incident has shocked many in the sports community, as Sperbeck was known for his dedication and friendship to those around him. His passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.
