Fighting in Ukraine intensified as Russian forces claimed significant actions against Ukrainian targets overnight. On April 18, Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported that its air defense systems intercepted 71 Ukrainian drones across six regions, with 49 of those downed in the Kursk area. Additionally, Russian troops announced they had taken control of the village of Preobrazhensky in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
In response, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a barrage of five missiles and 75 drones at various locations in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down 25 of these drones, while electronic warfare measures prevented another 30 from reaching their targets.
The violence has had devastating consequences for civilians. In Nikopol, Russian artillery shelling resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to five others, according to regional governor Serhiy Lysak. In Dnipro, the death toll from recent attacks rose to three, with 31 others injured and significant damage to at least 15 buildings. A drone strike in Kherson also killed two road workers, as reported by regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
Despite the ongoing attacks, Ukraine has made some territorial gains. Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskii, announced that Ukrainian forces had captured small areas of land totaling about 16 square kilometers near the settlements of Udachne, Kotlyne, and Shevchenko, close to the logistics hub of Pokrovsk.
In the realm of diplomacy, a Ukrainian delegation met with representatives from the UK, France, and Germany in Paris to discuss a potential ceasefire. This meeting included discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described the talks as an opportunity for Witkoff to update allies on ceasefire discussions. A Russian envoy characterized a meeting between Putin and Witkoff as “extremely productive,” while accusing some nations of attempting to disrupt the dialogue.
Tensions surrounding ceasefire agreements have escalated. The Russian-installed management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant claimed that Ukrainian drones attacked the facility, despite a 30-day moratorium on energy strikes. Russian officials allege that Ukraine has violated this agreement with numerous strikes on energy sites.
On the political front, Ukraine and the U.S. signed a memorandum aimed at advancing cooperation in mineral extraction. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for increased pressure on Russia to end the ongoing conflict, asserting that Ukraine has evidence of Chinese support for Russia in the form of artillery and gunpowder supplies. Zelenskyy also noted a shift in Russian tactics, stating that strikes on energy facilities have decreased, but civilian infrastructure is now being targeted instead.
In a bid to bolster its defenses, Ukraine expressed interest in purchasing at least 10 Patriot air defense systems from the U.S. Meanwhile, Russian officials warned that supplying Ukraine with certain missiles would be viewed as direct involvement in the conflict by Germany.
