Identification Released for Two California Marines Killed in New Mexico Military Exercise

Two California Marines tragically lost their lives in a convoy accident in New Mexico on Tuesday while supporting Border Patrol operations. The Marines, identified as Lance Cpl. Albert A. Aguilera from Riverside and Lance Cpl. Marcelino M. Gamino from Fresno, were part of a military exercise aimed at assisting U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The incident occurred near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, during a convoy movement. While the details surrounding the crash are still under investigation, reports suggest it involved a vehicle rollover. A third Marine was injured in the accident but survived and is currently in critical condition at University Medical Hospital in El Paso.

This event marks a significant moment as it is reportedly the first loss of life since the deployment of additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, a move initiated by the government to address illegal immigration. Lt. Col. Tyrone A. Barrion expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, stating that the loss is profoundly felt within the Marine community. He extended condolences to the families of Aguilera and Gamino.

Lance Cpl. Aguilera, aged 22, enlisted in March 2023 and was promoted to lance corporal in May 2024. Lance Cpl. Gamino, 28, had a decorated background as a combat engineer and had been with the Marines since May 2022, earning promotions and commendations during his service.

The Marines were engaged in operations under the Joint Task Force-Southern Border, which was established to enhance security and monitor threats along the border. This task force was created in response to an executive order from President Trump aimed at tightening border security.

As the investigation into the accident continues, the focus remains on supporting the families and comrades of the fallen Marines during this difficult time.
