The Los Angeles Police Department took a man into custody on Tuesday after he was caught on camera using a chainsaw to cut down several trees in Downtown Los Angeles. This incident sparked outrage among local residents who discovered the damage over the weekend.
The vandalism occurred on South Grand Avenue and other city-owned properties, where numerous trees were severely damaged. Some trees were cut at the base, while others were left hanging by a thin piece of bark, creating a disturbing sight.
Shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the LAPD shared a community alert featuring a photo of the suspect, described as a man in his 40s, riding a bicycle. About 90 minutes later, police announced that they had arrested him on charges of felony vandalism. His name has not yet been released.
The man allegedly targeted multiple locations, including near 1550 W 8 Street at 3:40 p.m. on Friday and near 350 S Grand Avenue at 1:22 a.m. on Saturday. Investigations are still ongoing to identify other areas affected by the tree cutting. Many of the trees damaged appeared to be Indian laurel figs, which are valued for their shade and environmental benefits.
Mayor Karen Bass expressed her disbelief at the act, stating it was “truly beyond comprehension.” She assured the public that city crews are working to replace the trees as quickly as possible.
Trees play a crucial role in urban settings, helping to clean the air, manage stormwater, and provide shade. Studies have shown that shaded areas can be significantly cooler than direct sunlight, which is especially important during hot days. The loss of these trees not only affects the environment but also the quality of life for local residents.
The LAPD is urging anyone with additional information about the incident to contact them. The community is rallying together, hoping to restore the green spaces that contribute so much to their neighborhood.
