Child among at least 10 fatalities in Israeli strike on school shelter in Gaza

At least ten people have died in an Israeli airstrike that hit a school in Gaza City, where many displaced individuals had sought refuge. Among the victims was a child who tragically lost their life in the ensuing fire. The Palestinian Civil Defence reported the recovery of these bodies early Wednesday morning. Many others were injured in this devastating attack.

The school, which was being used as a shelter for people forced from their homes, became a scene of chaos and despair. Emergency workers shared on Telegram that they were overwhelmed by the number of casualties. An Al Jazeera correspondent, Anas al-Sharif, described the horror, stating that children were being burned while they slept in makeshift tents. He emphasized that there are no safe places left in Gaza, with heavy shelling and artillery fire continuing for hours.

Video footage circulating on social media showed flames consuming tents and structures, with remnants of furniture and personal belongings reduced to ashes. Eyewitness accounts reported that several civilians perished in the attack on the Yafa School.

The situation remains dire, with the civil defence calling for urgent help from the International Committee of the Red Cross. They reported that people are trapped under rubble following bombings in the Tuffah neighborhood, but rescuers are unable to reach them due to the danger in the area, which is deemed a "no-go" zone by Israeli forces.

In addition to the school attack, there were reports of a child among two individuals killed in strikes on tent shelters in the Jabalia refugee camp. Another person died, and several were injured in a drone strike on shelters in the so-called al-Mawasi “safe zone” near Khan Younis. Throughout the early morning, intense artillery fire and air strikes were reported across Gaza, adding to the already heavy toll of the ongoing conflict.
