Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgency of a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Russia. He described Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate as a significant compromise. Zelensky stated that a ceasefire should be the first step toward peace.
His comments come after a recent trip to South Africa, which he cut short due to missile attacks on Kyiv. He called these attacks some of the most brazen and challenging moments for Ukraine. Zelensky expressed frustration, saying that if Russia truly wants a ceasefire, it must stop its large-scale strikes against Ukraine. He highlighted that Ukrainians are the ones suffering and losing patience in this conflict.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Zelensky, accusing him of hindering peace talks after the Ukrainian leader reiterated that Ukraine would not accept Russian control over Crimea. This southern peninsula was annexed by Russia in 2014, and Ukraine has consistently refused to relinquish it. Trump claimed that a deal to end the war was close but suggested that Zelensky’s stance would only prolong the fighting.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice-President JD Vance outlined a potential framework for peace, suggesting a freeze on current territorial lines. He mentioned that both Ukraine and Russia might need to make territorial concessions, although he did not specify what those would be. When asked about recognizing Russian control over Crimea, Trump stated that his main goal is to see the war end.
Zelensky also attended a meeting in London with officials from the U.S., UK, and Europe. He described the discussions as challenging but productive, indicating a mutual desire to keep working toward a resolution despite their differences.
The situation remains tense, with Zelensky’s government standing firm on its territorial integrity while facing pressure from various international players to find a diplomatic solution.
