Zelenskyy Alleges Chinese Nationals Assisting Russia in Drone Production

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently raised concerns about the involvement of Chinese citizens in Russia’s military efforts. During a news conference in Kyiv, he claimed that these individuals are helping to produce drones at a facility in Russia. Zelenskyy suggested that Russia might have acquired drone technology from China without Beijing’s approval, hinting at possible unauthorized agreements between Moscow and these Chinese workers.

This statement comes shortly after Zelenskyy accused China of supplying weapons and gunpowder to Russia. His comments followed the capture of two Chinese nationals who were reportedly fighting alongside Russian forces against Ukraine. Zelenskyy urged Ukraine’s Security Service to share detailed information with the Chinese government about its citizens working in the drone production sector.

Zelenskyy expressed concern that Russia may have "stolen" technology from China, emphasizing the need for Beijing to be aware of how its technology is being used. He stated, "I think it will be important for Beijing to see how their partners are working with them."

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned Chinese Ambassador Ma Shengkun to discuss these serious concerns regarding the role of Chinese citizens in military actions against Ukraine. Zelenskyy previously estimated that at least 155 Chinese individuals are fighting for Russia, and he reiterated his belief that China is providing arms to Moscow.

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis highlighted the seriousness of Chinese involvement in hostilities and its contradiction to the partnership between Ukraine and China. He called on China to take action to stop any support for Russia’s aggression, despite China’s repeated denials of involvement in the conflict.

The Chinese government has firmly stated that it does not provide lethal weapons to any party in the conflict and maintains strict control over dual-use items. As of now, neither Russia nor China has commented on Zelenskyy’s recent statements.
