Winds Hinder Crews Fighting Rapidly Spreading Silver Fire in Inyo and Mono Counties

A fast-moving wildfire in Inyo and Mono counties has prompted mandatory evacuations as it rapidly spread on Sunday evening. The fire, known as the Silver Fire, was first reported around 2:11 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road, just north of Bishop.

As the flames quickly jumped across the highway, they threatened multiple structures in the area. Cal Fire reported that by 4 p.m., they had requested additional resources, including aircraft and heavy equipment, to combat the blaze.

By 7:50 p.m., the fire had consumed at least 1,000 acres and was reported to be at 0% containment. Over 200 firefighters were working to control the flames, which were moving east and northeast at a rapid pace. Strong winds and dry conditions made it difficult for firefighting aircraft to operate, with many grounded at Bishop’s airport due to extreme turbulence.

The National Weather Service noted wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph, with humidity levels around 10%. A high-wind warning was issued for the following day, with gusts expected to reach up to 65 mph.

Evacuations were ordered for parts of northern Inyo and southeastern Mono counties, including the towns of Laws and Chalfant, as well as the White Mountains Wilderness Area. Approximately 30 miles of U.S. Highway 6 were closed to traffic, creating further challenges for residents and emergency responders.

An evacuation center has been set up at the Benton Community Center on Highway 120 for those affected by the fire. As the situation develops, officials continue to monitor the fire and assess the needs of the community.
