More than eight years after the brutal murder of hairstylist Fabio Sementelli, shocking details have emerged in the trial of his widow, Monica Sementelli. Christopher Austin, a convicted murderer, testified in court that Monica wanted her husband dead. He claimed that she left the door to their Woodland Hills home unlocked, allowing him and his accomplice, Robert Louis Baker, to enter and kill Fabio.
Austin, who is testifying against Monica as part of a plea deal, said he never spoke directly to her but heard from Baker that she wanted her husband "gone." He explained that Baker referred to Monica as his "girl" and suggested she was in an abusive relationship. According to Austin, Baker told him the murder was also about collecting insurance money.
The prosecution argues that Monica was the mastermind behind the plot to kill her husband, motivated by a desire to collect $1.6 million in life insurance and avoid a messy divorce. Baker, a convicted sex offender, had a romantic relationship with Monica and was her racquetball coach.
Austin’s testimony painted a vivid picture of the murder. He described how they approached the house and how Baker opened the patio door and began stabbing Fabio, who was caught completely off guard. After the attack, they fled in Fabio’s Porsche, which they abandoned a short distance away.
Initially, investigators believed the murder was a home invasion, especially since the house had been ransacked. However, the presence of Fabio’s Rolex watch on his wrist raised suspicions. Surveillance footage showed two hooded men approaching the home before the murder, and DNA evidence later linked Baker to the crime scene.
Monica’s demeanor during the trial has been notably calm, even as Austin’s testimony implicated her further. Prosecutors have presented evidence of numerous messages exchanged between Monica and Baker in the days leading up to the murder, indicating a coordinated effort.
Defense attorneys argue that there is no direct evidence linking Monica to the murder plot, insisting that she was misled by Baker. They claim she had no intention of harming her husband and was unaware of Baker’s plans.
As the trial continues, the courtroom is filled with tension. The evidence against Monica appears to be mounting, with jurors hearing about the couple’s secret communications and Baker’s past. The case has drawn significant media attention, and the community remains shocked by the events that unfolded that fateful day in January 2017.
