A former director of a migrant shelter in Massachusetts is calling for a federal investigation into serious allegations of abuse and misconduct within the state-run shelter system. Jon Fetherston, who previously managed a facility in Marlborough, claims that he faced threats and violence after exposing a case of sexual abuse involving a migrant.
Fetherston’s concerns began when he discovered that a resident named Ronald Joseph had repeatedly raped and impregnated his 13-year-old daughter. After confronting Joseph about the situation, Fetherston reported that Joseph became aggressive, yelling and attempting to physically attack him. Instead of being arrested, Joseph was given a ride to another shelter, and it took eight months for law enforcement to take action against him.
Fetherston has described a troubling pattern of violence and crime within the Massachusetts migrant shelter system, including sexual assaults, drug dealing, and domestic violence. He believes that many incidents go unreported due to a lack of oversight and accountability. In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, he expressed frustration over what he sees as a culture of silence and inaction regarding these issues.
He argues that the current shelter policies, particularly under Governor Maura Healey, have led to overcrowded and poorly managed facilities. Fetherston claims that local communities have not been consulted about the placement of migrant families, resulting in increased tensions and safety concerns. He has reported witnessing various traumatic incidents, including assaults and mental health crises, with minimal intervention from state authorities.
Fetherston’s plea for federal intervention comes amid his claims of retaliation for speaking out. He feels that those who challenge the status quo face threats and discrediting attempts. He insists that the ongoing mismanagement and abuse in the shelter system must be addressed to protect vulnerable individuals, especially children.
Healey’s office has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding these allegations. The situation has drawn attention, especially following a recent incident where an illegal immigrant was found storing weapons and drugs in a shelter. Fetherston believes this is just one example of the deeper issues plaguing the system and is urging immediate action to ensure safety and accountability.
