Wayfarers Chapel Could Be Relocating to a New Site in Rancho Palos Verdes

Wayfarers Chapel, a beloved sanctuary in Rancho Palos Verdes, is making plans to relocate after being forced to disassemble due to landslide damage. The chapel, known for its stunning glass architecture and as a popular wedding venue, was closed in May 2024 when leaders announced that they would dismantle it to prevent further risks from the unstable ground.

Chapel officials have announced they found a new site about a mile west of the old location, next to Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall on the former Battery Barnes military site. This new area is not affected by the landslide issues that have plagued the original site. The chapel’s leadership is optimistic about this move, stating that they believe it will be a more stable environment for the future.

However, there is still work to be done before the new chapel can be built. The leaders need to secure the site and raise approximately $20 million for the reconstruction. Plans for the new facility include a visitor’s center, museum, cafe, and gardens, all while maintaining the breathtaking ocean views that visitors cherish.

The original Wayfarers Chapel was built in 1951 and designed by Frank Lloyd Wright Jr., the son of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It has been a significant landmark and a cherished place for many couples who have chosen to tie the knot there.

While the chapel faced severe damage from recent landslides, including broken windows and structural issues, the decision to relocate offers hope for its future. The leaders are eager to rebuild and continue the chapel’s legacy in a safer environment.
