Virginia Giuffre, a well-known advocate for survivors of sexual abuse, has died at the age of 41. Her family confirmed that she took her own life at her farm in Western Australia on Friday. Giuffre was a prominent figure in the fight against sexual trafficking and had accused Prince Andrew of sexual abuse.
Her family released a heartfelt statement, describing her as a "fierce warrior" in the battle against sexual violence. They highlighted her ability to inspire and uplift those around her, saying, "She shone so bright. She will be missed beyond measure." Giuffre’s publicist, Dini von Mueffling, remembered her as loving and selfless, always putting others before herself.
Originally from the United States, Giuffre became a significant voice in the sexual abuse conversation after publicly accusing Prince Andrew in 2021. She claimed he forced her to have sex when she was just 17, both at the London home of Ghislaine Maxwell and at Epstein’s properties in Manhattan and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
In February 2022, Giuffre and Prince Andrew reached an out-of-court settlement for an undisclosed amount. This came after Andrew faced intense public scrutiny, leading him to renounce his military titles and royal patronages. While he has denied Giuffre’s allegations, her claims played a central role in the broader scandal surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died in prison in 2019.
Giuffre’s advocacy work began after she emerged as a key figure in the fallout from Epstein’s arrest. She had a tumultuous childhood marked by abuse, which she openly discussed in interviews. Recently, her publicist confirmed that she had been hospitalized following a serious car accident involving a school bus, which left her with dire health concerns.
She leaves behind three children, who her family described as the "light of her life." Attorney Sigrid McCawley expressed her admiration for Giuffre’s bravery, stating, "The world has lost an amazing human being today. Rest in peace, my sweet angel."
