After 529 days of being lost, Valerie the miniature dachshund has finally been rescued. This little wiener dog, known for her pink collar, went missing in November 2023 after escaping from her pen on a beach in Kangaroo Island, South Australia. She ran off into the nearby bush at Stokes Bay, prompting her owners and local volunteers to search for her for five days before they had to return home to New South Wales.
Valerie’s story captured hearts around the world as sightings of her were reported over the months. Many people followed the updates, hoping for her safe return. Recently, Kangala Wildlife Rescue announced that Valerie was found safe and healthy. A key part of the rescue involved a t-shirt belonging to her owner, which helped attract Valerie to a trap set up by the rescue team.
Lisa Karran, a director at Kangala, explained that they used strips of the shirt to lead Valerie closer to the trap, which was filled with toys, a bed, and hidden food. Eventually, Valerie’s curiosity got the best of her, and she entered the cage. The team was able to close the door remotely, securing her rescue.
After being on her own for so long, Valerie was understandably nervous. Karran wore the t-shirt to help comfort her during the introduction, allowing Valerie to approach her at her own pace. It was a heartwarming moment when Valerie finally relaxed and snuggled up in their laps.
In late March, Valerie was spotted on surveillance cameras, still wearing her pink collar, more than a year after she disappeared. Reports of her sightings helped the rescue team narrow down their search area, allowing them to feed her and monitor her movements with installed cameras.
Now that Valerie is safe, her caregivers are working to build her trust and strength. They have been feeding her her favorite meals, including roast chicken, to help her feel secure. Valerie is also wearing a special harness to prevent her from escaping again.
Her owners are excited to be reunited with her soon, but the rescue team wants to ensure that the transition is smooth and stress-free for Valerie after her long ordeal in the wild.
