USPS Chief Approves DOGE to Explore Efficiencies While Restricting Employee Data Access

The head of the U.S. Postal Service, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, has agreed to work with a team led by Elon Musk to improve the efficiency of the mail service. This decision was announced in a letter to congressional leaders released on Thursday. DeJoy signed the agreement with Musk’s team, known as the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), on Wednesday night.

DeJoy’s letter highlighted the Postal Service’s ongoing efforts to address its financial struggles through a controversial ten-year reorganization plan that began in 2021. He expressed optimism about receiving assistance from outside experts to enhance operations. However, leaders from two postal employee unions have raised concerns about the agreement. They emphasized the need for safeguards to protect employee data and prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Brian Renfroe, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, stated that while he supports protections for employee information, there is skepticism about compliance based on past experiences with other federal agencies. Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, echoed these concerns, stating that the union will do everything possible to keep employee and customer data secure.

Despite the agreement, it remains unclear what specific changes DOGE will implement at the Postal Service. DeJoy mentioned that he provided the team with a list of significant issues that he believes are beyond the Postal Service’s control, such as pension liabilities and regulatory challenges. He described the Postal Regulatory Commission as an obstacle to necessary changes.

The collaboration comes as the Trump administration faces multiple lawsuits regarding DOGE’s access to data from federal agencies. There have been discussions about privatizing the Postal Service and integrating it into the Commerce Department, which could face legal challenges.

As the Postal Service continues to implement its self-help strategies, including a voluntary retirement program aimed at reducing its workforce, the future of this partnership with Musk’s team remains to be seen. Union leaders are cautiously waiting to see how this arrangement will affect postal operations and employees.
