US to Engage in Discussions with Europeans Regarding Ukraine

Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, along with top diplomat Marco Rubio, is meeting with European leaders in Paris today to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. This gathering marks a significant moment for transatlantic relations, as it is the highest-level engagement on this issue since February.

The talks will also include UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, highlighting the importance of cooperation among Western nations. Recently, the U.S. has been criticized for not consulting its European allies frequently enough regarding the conflict.

During the meetings, Witkoff and Rubio are expected to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and his team. Following that, the U.S. Secretary of State will join Lammy and counterparts from France and Germany, along with European national security advisers.

The main focus of these discussions will be on finding ways to end the fighting in Ukraine. Witkoff will report back on his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which is likely to provide insights into Russia’s stance. European diplomats are urging the U.S. to apply more pressure on Russia to agree to an unconditional ceasefire. One official expressed the sentiment that they want the U.S. to take a firmer approach in these negotiations.

This meeting signifies a renewed effort to collaborate on this critical issue and may shape the future of the conflict in Ukraine.
