United States and Russian negotiators wrapped up a lengthy round of talks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aimed at establishing a partial ceasefire in Ukraine. The discussions lasted over 12 hours, with officials from both sides expected to release a joint statement soon.
According to the Russian state news agency TASS, the meeting was significant, although no major breakthroughs were anticipated. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the talks focused on critical issues, including the potential resumption of the 2022 Black Sea Grain Initiative. This agreement was designed to facilitate the export of Ukrainian grain but was abandoned by Russia earlier this year due to accusations that the West failed to ease sanctions on Russian agricultural products.
The U.S. has been actively engaged in these negotiations, with President Donald Trump expressing optimism about reaching a revenue-sharing deal concerning Ukrainian minerals. He also mentioned ongoing discussions about U.S. firms possibly owning Ukrainian power plants.
Ukraine’s delegation, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, had met with U.S. officials prior to the talks with Russia to discuss protecting civilian and energy infrastructure. Umerov described those discussions as productive, emphasizing Ukraine’s urgent need to safeguard its Black Sea ports, particularly Odesa, Kherson, and Mykolaiv, from ongoing Russian attacks.
Despite the diplomatic efforts, recent events have cast a shadow over the negotiations. Russia launched multiple air attacks on Kyiv, damaging homes and injuring civilians. Ukrainian officials have insisted that any peace talks must be accompanied by tangible actions from Russia to halt its military operations.
The atmosphere remains tense, with little trust between the negotiating parties. Analysts suggest that Russia’s demands may be increasingly unrealistic, and Ukraine’s willingness to engage in talks is contingent on a clear commitment from Moscow to cease hostilities.
As the situation unfolds, both sides seem to be grappling with the complexities of the ongoing conflict, with the hope that these discussions could pave the way for a more stable resolution. However, skepticism remains high regarding the likelihood of meaningful concessions from Russia.
