Two Women Die and Baby Injured in Wrong-Way DUI Accident on 60 Freeway in Pomona

Two women lost their lives, and a one-year-old child was injured in a tragic accident on the 60 Freeway in Pomona late Saturday night. The California Highway Patrol reported that a car was driving the wrong way when it collided with two other vehicles.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. near the 71 Freeway. Witnesses alerted the CHP about a car traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. The wrong-way driver, identified as 24-year-old Rick Rodriguez, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

The vehicle involved was a 2013 Honda Accord, which crashed head-on into a 2018 Honda Civic. The impact caused the Accord to spin out of control and hit a 2019 Toyota Highlander. Tragically, the driver of the Civic, a 29-year-old woman, and her 39-year-old passenger, both from Huntington Park, were pronounced dead at the scene. The one-year-old child, also in the Civic, sustained major injuries and was taken to Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

The driver of the Highlander, 47-year-old Veronica Segura from Commerce, was treated for minor injuries at Pomona Valley Hospital.

Following the crash, a SigAlert was issued for the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway, closing the carpool lane and two other lanes. Traffic was disrupted until around 4 a.m. Sunday when the lanes were reopened.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash to reach out to Officer J. Garcia at the CHP Baldwin Park Area Office. This heartbreaking event highlights the dangers of impaired driving and the devastating consequences it can have on families and communities.
