A senior official from the Justice Department has announced plans to take legal action against the University of California (UC) system over allegations of antisemitism. Leo Terrell, who leads a task force focused on combating antisemitism, indicated that the administration is prepared to file significant lawsuits against UC and other universities across the country.
Terrell spoke during a Fox News interview, revealing that the task force has identified several campuses, including UCLA, USC, and UC Berkeley, for investigation. He emphasized that the federal government may pursue hate crime charges and lawsuits under Title VII, which protects against employment discrimination based on race, religion, and other factors.
The task force, established in March, has faced challenges in its efforts to investigate claims of antisemitism. Terrell noted that some universities have resisted the task force’s attempts to gather information, preventing visits to campuses and discussions with students and law enforcement.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for the University of California stated that the institution is committed to addressing antisemitism and fostering a safe environment for all students. They highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen policies against discrimination.
The Justice Department’s scrutiny of the UC system comes amid broader actions against several universities, including Harvard, which has been criticized for its handling of antisemitism allegations related to pro-Palestinian protests. Harvard is currently embroiled in legal disputes with the Trump administration over funding and student admissions.
In March, the Education Department warned numerous campuses, including four UC locations, to protect Jewish students or face potential enforcement actions. The investigation into UC stems from concerns about a "potential pattern" of discrimination against Jewish employees.
As these developments unfold, Terrell’s task force continues to push for accountability in addressing antisemitism across American universities. The situation remains tense, with universities expressing their commitment to combatting discrimination while navigating the administration’s demands.
