Trump warns that Putin will retaliate for Ukraine drone strike.

The White House has been asked for comments following a recent conversation between former President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Russia’s state-owned news agency, RIA Novosti, Putin claimed that Ukraine has attempted to disrupt peace negotiations and described the Kyiv government as having "essentially turned into a terrorist organization."

This call marks the first time the two leaders spoke since Ukraine launched a surprise drone attack on Russian airbases on June 1, targeting nuclear-capable bombers. The Kremlin stated that Trump informed Putin the U.S. was not given any warning about the attack.

Last week, Trump hinted at a two-week deadline for Putin regarding peace efforts in Ukraine. He expressed frustration, suggesting that if he felt Putin was not serious about negotiations, the U.S. response to Russia could change. Trump has been vocal about his views, previously stating that Putin was "playing with fire" due to increased attacks on Ukraine.

On the same day as the Trump-Putin conversation, a Ukrainian delegation, including Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak, met with U.S. Senators in Washington. Their discussions focused on military support, sanctions against Russia, and a reconstruction investment fund. Yermak emphasized the need for defense support and updates on the battlefield situation.

This meeting follows a recent round of peace talks in Istanbul, which concluded without significant progress. Ukrainian negotiators reported that Russia rejected their demand for an unconditional ceasefire, while Russia proposed temporary ceasefires in specific frontline areas, though details were not provided.

Despite the ongoing conflict and challenges, Trump has consistently stated his belief that both sides are making progress toward peace.
