Trump Insists He’s Serious About a Third Term, Despite Constitutional Limitations

President Donald Trump recently stirred conversation about a potential third term in office. He made these remarks while aboard Air Force One, returning to Washington from a weekend in Florida. When asked by reporters if he would commit to not serving beyond January 20, 2029, Trump responded, "We have a long way to go before we can even think about that."

This comment followed his earlier statements to NBC News where he indicated he was "not joking" about the idea of a third term. Trump mentioned that many people have urged him to consider it, saying, "I’ve had more people ask me to have a third term." However, he emphasized that he is currently focused on his present term, stating, "We have almost four years to go. And that’s a long time."

The Constitution, through the 22nd Amendment, limits presidents to two terms. Despite this, Trump hinted at "methods" that could allow him to extend his presidency. He did not elaborate on these methods but did mention that one possibility involves Vice President JD Vance winning the presidency and then transferring power to him.

Trump’s openness to a third term aligns with support from some of his allies. Former advisor Steve Bannon has already backed Trump for the 2028 campaign. Additionally, Congressman Andy Ogles has proposed an amendment to the 22nd Amendment to facilitate Trump’s return to the presidency.

In a separate but related issue, Trump expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over recent comments criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump described himself as "pissed off" and "very angry" with Putin, particularly regarding calls for a transitional government in Ukraine. He warned of potential sanctions against Russia if they do not cooperate with a ceasefire plan he is pursuing.

Trump’s statements come amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides accusing each other of violating ceasefire agreements. He remains committed to ending the conflict and has promised swift action during his campaign.

As he continues to navigate these complex issues, Trump’s comments about a third term and his stance on foreign policy are likely to remain in the spotlight as he prepares for the future.
