A debate is heating up in Congress over a proposal that would allow new parents to vote by proxy while they care for their newborns. This plan, backed by President Donald Trump, has sparked a conflict between House Speaker Mike Johnson and supporters like Rep. Anna Paulina Luna from Florida.
Trump recently expressed his support for the proxy voting idea, saying, "You’re having a baby, I think you should be able to call in and vote." He added that he didn’t understand why the proposal was controversial. His comments came while he was on Air Force One, speaking to reporters.
The proposal aims to let new parents vote by proxy for up to 12 weeks after the birth of their child. This initiative has gained traction, with 218 lawmakers showing support, which is enough to push it to a vote. Luna, along with Rep. Brittany Pettersen from Colorado, is leading this effort.
However, Speaker Johnson has historically opposed proxy voting. He has called it unconstitutional and criticized its use during the COVID-19 pandemic under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Despite his stance, after Trump endorsed the idea, Johnson reached out to Luna to discuss limiting the proxy voting to new mothers who cannot travel due to emergencies.
Earlier this week, Johnson attempted to block the effort, but nine Republicans joined all Democrats in voting against him, resulting in a loss for the Speaker. Following this defeat, Johnson canceled votes for the rest of the week.
Luna emphasized that the issue is not about pushing legislation for the president but about ensuring that new parents have the ability to participate in Congress while managing their new responsibilities. It remains uncertain whether the House will revisit the proxy voting proposal before the upcoming April recess.
The debate highlights a significant divide within the Republican Party, as some members support the proposal while others, like Johnson, remain opposed. The outcome could impact how Congress approaches similar issues in the future.
