Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s involvement in peace negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia during a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This conversation took place against the backdrop of escalating tensions and discussions surrounding the war, particularly following a series of talks held by U.S. officials with Russian representatives.
Trudeau emphasized that any sustainable peace in Europe necessitates security for Ukraine, stating that "there can be no sustainable peace in Europe without security for Ukraine." He and Zelenskyy jointly underscored the importance of including Ukraine in any discussions aimed at ending the conflict, which has persisted since Russia’s invasion in 2022. The Prime Minister’s Office highlighted that the leaders discussed the need for a lasting peace that would foster a strong, democratic, and prosperous Ukraine.
The call came shortly after the U.S. conducted its first round of bilateral talks with Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, a move that has raised concerns among Ukrainian and European leaders about their exclusion from the negotiation process. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Canada’s leadership in the G7 this year and acknowledged the continued military support and sanctions against Russia that Canada has provided.
In the midst of these diplomatic efforts, U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Zelenskyy, labeling him a "dictator" and suggesting that Ukraine should expedite peace negotiations to avoid further losses. This rhetoric has drawn condemnation from NATO allies, who have defended Zelenskyy’s legitimacy as Ukraine’s elected leader.
Amidst the backdrop of these political dynamics, discussions between U.S. officials and Ukraine have become increasingly strained. White House national security adviser Mike Waltz indicated that frustrations within the Trump administration stem from perceived roadblocks created by Zelenskyy in the pursuit of peace. Tensions were further highlighted when a planned press conference involving Zelenskyy and Trump’s special envoy was abruptly altered, shifting from a media event to a simple photo opportunity.
Zelenskyy remains committed to securing a reliable and lasting peace agreement, expressing readiness for beneficial discussions with the U.S. regarding investments and security guarantees. European leaders, including those from Britain and France, have also proposed a Europe-led security guarantee for Ukraine as part of any future peace agreement, a notion that has garnered support from the Trump administration.
As the situation continues to evolve, the need for a unified approach to peace negotiations involving Ukraine remains a focal point for both Canadian and European leaders, who are keen to ensure that Ukraine’s interests are represented on the international stage.
