Train service between Orange and San Diego counties has been suspended for an estimated six weeks. This halt comes as crews work to stabilize a vulnerable section of coastline in San Clemente, an area that has posed risks to the railway for years.
The closure began on Monday, affecting Metrolink’s Orange County and Inland Empire-Orange County train routes. Trains will now only operate between the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station, cutting off access to four southern stops: San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, San Clemente Pier, and Oceanside. Unfortunately, no bus or alternative transport will be available for affected passengers.
Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner service will also face disruptions due to the construction. However, a bypass bus will run between Irvine and Oceanside to maintain service for those traveling through the area.
These disruptions follow recent emergency repairs called for by transportation authorities to address urgent threats from slope and beach erosion. The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) noted that the construction aims to protect the rail line from ongoing coastal erosion and landslide risks.
This section of railway has experienced repeated closures in recent years due to natural events like landslides and rockfalls, which have jeopardized the safety of the tracks. Officials are under increasing pressure to find a long-term solution to these ongoing issues. Advocates and lawmakers are particularly concerned about the Lossan rail corridor, which serves as a vital link for both passenger and freight services.
The construction in San Clemente is just the first phase of a larger emergency project that is expected to take a year to complete. The initial work will restore rock reinforcements along the tracks, which have deteriorated due to wave damage and erosion. Crews will also place around 240,000 cubic yards of sand in the area to help stabilize the slope and protect the railway.
As work continues, both Metrolink and Amtrak passengers should stay informed about service changes and plan their travel accordingly.
