On March 5, volunteers searching for missing persons unearthed a mass grave at an abandoned ranch in Teuchitlán, Jalisco, just outside Guadalajara. The volunteers, part of a group called Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco, found disturbing evidence including charred bones, teeth, and what appeared to be crematoriums used to dispose of bodies. Among the other items discovered were hundreds of dusty shoes, likely belonging to victims who were murdered and burned. This grim find has fueled anger across Mexico, where many families are still searching for their loved ones who have vanished in recent years.
The mass grave’s discovery has prompted protests, with demonstrators placing 400 pairs of shoes in Mexico City’s Zócalo plaza to symbolize the missing. Many protesters have lost family members to forced disappearances, and they blame the government for its failure to address the violence and corruption that has allowed these atrocities to continue. One protester, Gustavo Sánchez, whose son disappeared in 2024, expressed frustration over the lack of progress in finding the missing.
Since 2006, when Mexico intensified its "war on drugs," over 125,000 people have been reported missing.
