Suspect Arrested for Allegedly Starting Four Separate Fires in Santa Monica, According to Police

An arson suspect has been arrested in Santa Monica for allegedly igniting four separate fires throughout the city earlier this month. Marco Antonio Rubio, a 36-year-old man, was taken into custody after police linked him to the incidents that occurred around 1 p.m. on a Sunday. According to the Santa Monica Police Department, Rubio used a lighter and an aerosol can to start the fires, which included a discarded pillow and cardboard in the 1000 block of Colorado Avenue, a mattress on 16th Street and Michigan Avenue, a net on a little league batting cage at Memorial Park, and a parked vehicle in the 1500 block of 18th Street.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fires. The investigation into the incidents was aided by aerial drone technology, which helped law enforcement identify and locate the suspect quickly. Rubio, who acted alone according to authorities, did not have any previous arson-related offenses, although he had a history of charges related to resisting arrest and domestic violence in Texas.

Police Chief Ramon Batista praised the coordinated response of the police and fire departments, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring public safety in Santa Monica. "Through teamwork and advanced technology, we quickly identified the suspect and prevented further harm," he stated in a news release.

Rubio’s arrest comes amid heightened concerns over fire safety in the region, particularly following several makeshift fires that erupted around Los Angeles County in the aftermath of the devastating Palisades and Eaton wildfires. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to help prevent further incidents.
