A student at College of the Canyons recently encountered a frightening situation in the women’s bathroom when she discovered a man attempting to record her with his phone. This incident, which took place on October 22, has raised serious concerns about safety on campus, especially as it follows two similar occurrences reported within the past year.
The student, who prefers to remain anonymous, was using the restroom when she noticed a hand reaching under the stall, holding a phone aimed at her. Startled, she shouted, "What the hell!" and quickly began recording the man. In the video she later shared online, she confronted him, demanding to know why he was filming. The man, dressed in black and attempting to conceal his face, responded by pulling back his hand and trying to leave the restroom.
In her attempt to get a better look at him, she reached for his jacket, but he pushed her aside and ran out of the bathroom. Despite her efforts to chase him, he managed to escape across campus.
Following the incident, the student learned that this was not an isolated case. College officials had already issued alerts about similar incidents, including one reported earlier in March, where another female student experienced a similar violation. School spokesperson Eric Harnish stated that they take student safety seriously and have briefed Campus Safety officers to be vigilant.
The unsettling nature of these incidents has left the student feeling anxious and unsafe. She shared that she now avoids campus restrooms and has even purchased pepper spray for protection. "I’m scared, every day," she admitted. "For a month I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t think straight."
The college is actively investigating these incidents to ensure the safety of its students. The student who recorded the confrontation hopes that by sharing her experience, other potential victims will feel empowered to come forward.
As the investigation continues, students are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior to campus authorities, emphasizing the importance of a safe learning environment for everyone.
