A student at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita recently confronted a man who was attempting to record her in the women’s bathroom. This incident, which took place on October 22, has raised concerns about safety on campus, especially since it is not the first of its kind.
The student noticed a hand reaching under the stall while she was using the bathroom and immediately reacted by yelling out. She began recording the man, who was dressed in black and trying to hide his face with a jacket. The confrontation was captured on video and later shared on social media, gaining significant attention.
In the video, the student questions the man, asking, “Why are you recording?” As she tries to pull his jacket to get a better look at him, he pushes her away and escapes the restroom. The student later expressed her fear and discomfort, stating that she now avoids campus restrooms.
This incident is part of a troubling trend at the college. School officials confirmed that there have been at least three similar reports over the past year. Just weeks before this confrontation, another student reported a similar experience where a man was seen filming her from under a stall. In response, the college sent out alerts to students, urging them to report any suspicious activity.
Eric Harnish, a spokesperson for the college, emphasized the seriousness of these incidents and reassured students that campus safety officers have been informed and are on alert for future occurrences. The college is taking steps to ensure the safety of its students, but the victims of these incidents are understandably shaken.
The student who recorded the recent incident shared that she had initially refrained from posting the video at the request of campus authorities, who wanted to avoid alerting the suspect. However, after learning about other similar incidents, she felt compelled to share her experience to raise awareness.
This alarming situation highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and safety measures in public spaces, especially in areas like restrooms, where individuals should feel secure. The college community is now more aware and on alert, hoping to prevent further incidents and support those affected.
