Space Force Base Commander Dismissed Following Email Critique of Vice President JD Vance After Greenland Trip

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made headlines on Thursday by firing the commander of a Space Force base in Greenland. This decision came just hours after Colonel Susannah Meyers sent an email to all personnel at Pituffik Space Base that criticized Vice President JD Vance following his visit to the base last month.

The Space Force confirmed that Colonel Kenneth Klock, who oversees Space Base Delta 1, removed Meyers due to a "loss of confidence in her ability to lead." The official statement emphasized that military leaders are expected to maintain nonpartisan conduct while performing their duties. Colonel Shawn Lee has now taken over command at the base.

In his remarks about the situation, Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell highlighted the importance of civilian control over the military, stating that actions undermining the chain of command or opposing President Trump’s agenda would not be tolerated.

The controversy began after Vance’s visit to Pituffik on March 28. In her email dated March 31, Meyers expressed her thoughts on the Vice President’s comments, stating that the administration’s concerns discussed during the visit did not reflect the views of those at the base. She assured her team that while she was in command, they would all stand united.

Meyers’ email was seen as a rare instance of pushback against the Trump administration’s criticisms of NATO allies. Following her dismissal, several Republican senators praised the decision. Senator Jim Banks remarked that Meyers attempted to politicize the Space Force and was held accountable for it. Other senators echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for military leaders to align with the President’s mission.

Vice President Vance’s visit included strong criticisms of Denmark, claiming that the country had not invested adequately in Greenland. He emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the U.S. and Greenland for national security.

This incident highlights the ongoing tensions within the military regarding political discourse and the expectations placed on military leaders to remain neutral. As the situation develops, it raises questions about the balance between political views and military command.
