Southern California Man Sets Line Fire That Burned 44,000 Acres and Injured 6 Firefighters, Facing Life Sentence

A man from Norco has been found guilty of starting the Line fire, which burned approximately 44,000 acres in the San Bernardino Mountains and injured six firefighters. Justin Halstenberg, 35, was convicted on Thursday of multiple charges, including aggravated arson and possession of flammable materials. He now faces a possible life sentence in prison.

The fire began on September 5, 2024, and quickly escalated, forcing the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents and damaging numerous properties. Halstenberg came under suspicion after an automatic license plate reader linked his truck to the area where the fire started. He was arrested on September 10, just five days after the fire ignited.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Halstenberg attempted to start three separate fires within an hour in Highland. Two of these fires were extinguished quickly, but the third developed into the Line fire. Investigators found an ignition device at the fire’s origin, similar to one Halstenberg had used in previous fire-starting attempts.

During the trial, Halstenberg pleaded not guilty, and his mother defended him, insisting he did not start the fire. However, the evidence against him was compelling, leading to his conviction.

San Bernardino County officials praised the work of law enforcement and fire agencies for their efforts in bringing Halstenberg to justice. They emphasized the seriousness of arson and its impact on communities and the environment.
