Southern California Man Sentenced to 15 Years to Life for Killing Wife and Disposing of Her Severed Legs in Trash

Jack Potter, a 72-year-old man from San Diego, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Laurie Potter, in a case that remained unsolved for nearly two decades. In a disturbing twist, Potter had managed to convince others that Laurie was still alive after he killed her in February 2003.

Prosecutors revealed that Jack smothered Laurie, who was 54 at the time of her death, and then disposed of her dismembered legs in a trash container in Rancho San Diego. The gruesome discovery of her legs by a maintenance worker went cold for years until advancements in DNA technology in 2020 led to a breakthrough in the case.

Potter had lived a seemingly normal life after the murder, even opening credit cards in Laurie’s name and selling their home while pocketing the profits. He even began a new relationship with a woman who shared his wife’s name, further deepening the deception.

During his sentencing, Potter expressed remorse, claiming that he let his emotions get the better of him. He apologized for his actions, stating, “I don’t know why. It just happened and I’m sorry.”

Laurie’s family had believed she was alive until Potter’s arrest in 2021. They were shocked to learn of her fate, as she had never been reported missing. The case marked a significant use of investigative genealogy by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, which ultimately led to the identification of Laurie through DNA matching with her son.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to conceal their crimes and the importance of continued efforts in pursuing justice, even for cases that seem long forgotten.
