Sen. John Thune, Former Trump Opponent, Now a Crucial Supporter

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has played a crucial role in advancing President Trump’s significant tax and spending bill through the Senate, paving the way for a final vote in the House. This marks a notable shift in Thune’s relationship with Trump, moving from political rivalry to a united front.

In the aftermath of the 2020 election, Thune and Trump had a strained relationship. Thune publicly stated he never questioned the election results and criticized Trump’s actions following the January 6 Capitol attack as “inexcusable.” Trump responded by calling Thune weak and suggested he should face a primary challenge. However, by early 2024, Thune had decided it was time to support Trump again. A visit to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in March helped mend fences between the two.

Lisa Hager, a political professor at South Dakota State University, noted that Thune’s approachable Midwestern style has been key in rebuilding this relationship. His pragmatic approach to policymaking has allowed them to find common ground. Thune first gained national attention over 20 years ago when he defeated prominent Democrat Tom Daschle in a Senate race. Throughout his career, he has shown a talent for adapting to the changing political landscape.

Thune’s colleague, South Dakota Republican Mike Rounds, emphasized that Trump values working with someone who shares his long-term goals for the country, particularly when it comes to tax cuts and economic growth. This year, Thune has helped facilitate the confirmation of several of Trump’s controversial nominees, which has strengthened their partnership.

During the recent Senate debates on the bill, Thune and Trump communicated regularly, meeting frequently at the White House. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso confirmed their close collaboration, stating they worked together to persuade fellow senators to support the bill. Thune’s efforts were instrumental in securing the final vote from Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, which was crucial for the GOP.

Thune expressed that being aligned with Trump has made a significant difference in their efforts. He acknowledged that their shared goals have created a productive working relationship. However, he also noted that their partnership will face ongoing challenges, and how they handle these will determine the effectiveness of a divided party moving forward.
