S. Jack Hu, Provost of the University of Georgia, Appointed Chancellor of UC Riverside Facing Significant Challenges

S. Jack Hu has been appointed as the new chancellor of UC Riverside, taking over from Kim A. Wilcox, who is retiring after a decade in the position. Hu, who currently serves as the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Georgia, will officially start on July 15.

The announcement came from the UC Board of Regents during a meeting on Wednesday. Hu’s appointment is seen as timely, given the challenges currently facing the University of California system, including cuts to federal funding and scrutiny over diversity efforts.

Hu brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has a strong background in research and outreach, particularly for students from rural and low-income backgrounds. Under Wilcox’s leadership, UC Riverside saw significant growth, including an increase of over 5,000 students and the establishment of a new medical school.

In a statement, UC President Michael V. Drake praised Hu’s commitment to innovation and his ability to enhance opportunities for students and faculty. Hu expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead UC Riverside, sharing his journey as an immigrant from China and the first in his family to attend college.

Born in Hunan province, Hu completed his undergraduate studies at Tianjin University before moving to the U.S. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan, where he spent over 20 years in various faculty and administrative roles.

As chancellor, Hu will face challenges including federal funding cuts and a hiring freeze across the UC system. He acknowledged the importance of diversifying funding sources, emphasizing the need for collaboration with federal agencies to support research and education.

UC Riverside is known for its diversity and commitment to serving low-income students. The campus has been ranked highly for its acceptance of first-generation college students and low-income individuals. However, it also faces issues like crowded housing and dining facilities as it continues to grow.

Hu’s priorities will include enhancing student success, expanding healthcare access, and supporting the local community. His leadership is expected to help UC Riverside maintain its momentum as a leading research institution while addressing the challenges ahead.
