Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Major Events on Day 1,120

Fighting in Ukraine escalated on March 20, with reports of significant attacks by Russian forces across various regions. In the Sumy region, Russian drone strikes damaged two hospitals, resulting in the death of a 29-year-old man and injuries to three others in a separate attack on a residential building. Nearby, in the Kyiv region, drone attacks also left a 60-year-old man injured as several houses were damaged.

In Dnipro, Ukraine’s state railway network reported that Moscow’s forces targeted its power system twice, with the first strike occurring shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a 30-day pause on attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. The second attack injured four people. Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, condemned these actions, emphasizing that Russia is targeting civilians and infrastructure.

Despite claims from the Kremlin that it had called off a drone attack and shot down several of its own drones, Kyiv’s military reported a different scenario. They stated that their air defense managed to shoot down 72 out of 145 Russian drones launched overnight, with additional losses attributed to electronic warfare. President Zelenskyy noted that 40 drones were launched shortly after a call between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Putin, during which a limited ceasefire was discussed. He also highlighted that since ceasefire talks began earlier in the month, Moscow had launched over 1,300 guided bombs, eight missiles, and approximately 66 long-range strike drones at Kyiv.

On the Russian side, the Ministry of Defence claimed to have destroyed 57 Ukrainian drones in one night, with 35 of those over the Kursk region. They also reported an attack in the Krasnodar region that ignited a fire at an oil depot. Meanwhile, at least one Russian soldier was killed, and four others were injured due to Ukrainian shelling in the Belgorod region.

In terms of ceasefire discussions, President Trump revealed that he and President Zelenskyy had a detailed conversation about the situation. The White House reported that Zelenskyy agreed to a partial ceasefire and requested more air defense support, which Trump promised to help secure from Europe. However, Zelenskyy accused Putin of rejecting a full ceasefire despite public statements suggesting otherwise. He expressed confidence in Ukraine’s European allies, stating that there would be no betrayal from their partners.

Looking ahead, a U.S. delegation, including National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is set to meet with Russian representatives in Saudi Arabia to continue discussions about the ongoing conflict.

In military developments, the German government announced plans to provide $3.3 billion in military aid to Ukraine, reversing a previous decision by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Additionally, Russia and Ukraine conducted a prisoner swap, exchanging 372 soldiers, with each side returning a similar number of personnel, including seriously injured troops.

As the conflict continues, the situation remains tense, with both sides engaged in ongoing military actions and diplomatic efforts to reach a resolution.
