Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Key Developments on Day 1,134

On April 2, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated with several violent incidents reported across the regions. In the Zaporizhia region of southeast Ukraine, a Russian overnight attack resulted in one death and two injuries, according to Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov. Meanwhile, in Kryvyi Rih, a Russian ballistic missile strike killed at least four people and injured 14 others, including two children.

In the Kharkiv region, a drone attack left an infant, a seven-year-old boy, and six others injured. Kharkiv’s Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that 15 drone strikes occurred in the area. In a related incident, at least 60 residents of the Russian city of Kursk had to evacuate their homes due to debris from intercepted Ukrainian drones hitting their apartment buildings. Acting Governor Alexander Khinshtein confirmed the evacuations.

Russian state news agencies reported that Russian forces destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, mainly over the Kursk region. The Ukrainian air force claimed to have shot down 41 out of 74 Russian drones launched toward Ukraine, while another 20 drones were stopped by electronic jamming.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that nearly 4,000 people lost electricity after a Russian drone hit a substation in the Sumy region. Artillery fire also damaged a power line in the Dnipropetrovsk region. In a twist, Russia’s Ministry of Defence accused Ukraine of striking Russian energy facilities, despite a mutual ceasefire agreement on such targets brokered by the United States.

In a separate development, Russia announced the closure of the Black Sea port terminal that handles oil exports from Kazakhstan, as well as from American companies Chevron and Exxon Mobil. This decision followed inspections of the moorings for vessels at the terminal.

On the diplomatic front, eleven Ukrainian children were returned to Kyiv from Russia and Russian-occupied territories under the initiative "Bring Kids Back UA," according to Andriy Yermak, President Zelenskyy’s chief of staff. Furthermore, the Kremlin indicated that Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev might visit the United States soon, with ongoing discussions with Washington reported.

As the situation continues to unfold, the ongoing conflict and its associated humanitarian crises remain a pressing concern for both nations and the international community.
