Russia initiates extensive drone assault on Ukraine ahead of ceasefire negotiations.

At least seven people lost their lives in a drone attack on Ukraine, as Russian forces launched a significant wave of drones overnight on Sunday. Local officials and emergency services reported the tragic toll, which includes three victims—a 5-year-old child—who died in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. The attack caused widespread panic, with explosions echoing throughout the city for over five hours.

This assault comes just as Ukraine and Russia are set to engage in ceasefire negotiations in Saudi Arabia. These talks, mediated by the U.S., aim to address a pause in long-range attacks that target energy facilities and civilian areas. Ahead of the negotiations, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Ukrainian delegation would meet with U.S. officials to discuss the details of a potential partial ceasefire.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 147 drones during the night. Ukrainian defenses managed to intercept 97 of these drones, while 25 others were thwarted before reaching their intended targets. The drone strikes impacted various regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Odesa, Donetsk, and the capital, Kyiv.

In Kyiv, the military administration confirmed that the drone attack resulted in three fatalities and left ten others injured. Residents reported hearing the sounds of explosions and witnessing debris from shot-down drones falling on homes. This destruction has left many in Kyiv skeptical about the sincerity of the upcoming ceasefire talks. Dmytro Zapadnya, a resident whose building was damaged, expressed doubt that any agreement with Russia would be honored.

In addition to the casualties in Kyiv, four people were reported dead in the Donetsk region, including three individuals killed in a strike on the town of Dobropillya. Zelenskyy highlighted the ongoing threat, stating that Ukraine faces daily attacks, with significant numbers of aerial bombs, drones, and missiles being deployed against them.

On the Russian side, officials claimed to have shot down 59 Ukrainian drones overnight, with one casualty reported in Rostov due to a Ukrainian drone attack. A woman also died in Belgorod when a drone hit the car she was traveling in.

As the situation continues to unfold, the people of Ukraine remain resilient but wary, grappling with the harsh realities of ongoing conflict while holding onto hope for peace.
