Romanian Far-Right Populist Challenges Ban on Polling

Calin Georgescu is facing a tough situation after the Romanian electoral bureau banned him from running in the upcoming elections. Georgescu claims that the Bureau of Electoral Complaints (BEC) overstepped its authority. He believes that a recent decision by the constitutional court regarding the November elections should not affect his candidacy for the May vote.

In a passionate social media post, Georgescu described the ban as a serious threat to democracy. His supporters reacted strongly, leading to protests in Bucharest on Sunday night. Thousands gathered outside the BEC offices, resulting in clashes with the police. The unrest saw at least one car overturned and windows smashed at nearby bars. Authorities detained four people during the chaos, and more protests are expected in the coming days.

Despite the turmoil, Georgescu expressed gratitude to the Romanian people in a video message. He urged his supporters to avoid violence, emphasizing the need for confidence in the future of the country.

George Simion, a prominent ally of Georgescu and leader of the far-right Alliance for Uniting Romanians (AUR), has joined the outcry. He claimed that Romania is experiencing a coup d’état. In a video statement, Simion called for severe consequences for those he believes orchestrated the ban, insisting that Georgescu is the candidate the people support.

The situation remains tense as Georgescu and his allies continue to fight for his candidacy and challenge the decisions made by the electoral bureau.
