RFK Jr, prominent vaccine skeptic, supports measles vaccination during serious US outbreak

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent health official in the United States known for his skepticism towards vaccines, has recently voiced support for the measles vaccine in light of a severe outbreak of the disease in Texas. Despite his previous reservations, Kennedy expressed deep concern about the spread of measles in an opinion piece published on Fox News.

The U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services highlighted the historical impact of the MMR vaccine, stating that before its introduction, nearly every child in the U.S. contracted measles. Kennedy emphasized the importance of vaccines not only in protecting individual children but also in contributing to community immunity, safeguarding those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.

Recently, the U.S. reported its first measles-related death in a decade, involving an unvaccinated school-aged child in northwest Texas. The state has identified 146 cases since late January, with a concentration of infections within a Mennonite community. Measles, a highly contagious disease, poses significant risks to unvaccinated individuals, particularly young infants who are often ineligible for immunization.

Kennedy, who has faced criticism for promoting debunked research linking vaccines to autism, acknowledged the dangers posed by measles and the importance of vaccination. Health officials underscored that measles can lead to hospitalization in about one in five unvaccinated individuals and can result in pneumonia in approximately one out of every 20 children with the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
