Rescued Boater Found Off Catalina Island Coast; Dog Remains Missing

The U.S. Coast Guard successfully rescued a man stranded in a dinghy off the Southern California coast on Saturday evening, but a dog that was accompanying him remains missing. The duo had reportedly gone missing from a 34-foot sailboat while traveling in the waters between Catalina Island and the mainland.

The Coast Guard received an alert about the pair’s disappearance around 8 p.m. from someone aboard the sailboat. In response, a rescue boat was dispatched from Los Angeles, and a nearby cutter was redirected to assist in the search. Additionally, air support was provided by a Coast Guard helicopter from a station in San Diego.

The helicopter located the dinghy approximately 1,400 yards from the sailboat, roughly 18 miles east of Catalina Island. Upon retrieval, the man was found suffering from mild hypothermia, but fortunately, he did not have any serious medical issues. Despite the successful rescue of the man, the dog could not be located and is still unaccounted for, raising concerns among the Coast Guard officials and the man’s family.

Coast Guard public affairs specialist Richard Uranga confirmed the ongoing search efforts for the missing dog, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to locating the animal. As the search continues, the incident highlights the risks associated with boating in open waters and the importance of safety measures while at sea.
