Republican Governor Criticizes City for Considering Antisemitic Resolution and Threatens Funding Cuts

A city in Texas is facing potential loss of state funding due to a resolution that calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo against Israel. Governor Greg Abbott expressed his disapproval in a letter to San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson after the City Council voted to consider the resolution on May 6.

In his letter, Abbott highlighted that while the council was discussing a ceasefire in what they referred to as "occupied Palestine," they had not condemned Hamas for its actions following the October 7 massacre. He stated, "Israel is a stalwart ally of the United States and a friend to Texas," emphasizing that Texas would not tolerate antisemitism or policies against Israel.

Abbott noted that he had already begun reviewing grants to San Marcos to see if the city had violated any terms by not complying with Texas law, which prohibits government entities from supporting boycotts against Israel. If the council proceeds with the resolution, Abbott warned that his office would terminate current grants and halt future agreements.

The resolution, which was discussed during an April 15 meeting, seeks to promote a permanent ceasefire, an arms embargo on Israel, and recognition of Palestinian sovereignty. Council member Alyssa Garza, who introduced the resolution, framed it as a stand against what she sees as government overreach, arguing that funding for military actions is connected to cuts in local aid for housing and education.

Another council member, Amanda Rodriguez, described the resolution as a moral issue rather than a political one, labeling the situation in Gaza as genocide. She urged those in the Jewish community to understand that the resolution should not be seen as antisemitic.

As the San Marcos City Council prepares for the vote, the fallout from this decision could have significant implications for the city’s funding and its relationship with the state. The council members have yet to respond to requests for comments on the matter.
