Report: Staffer of Senator Cory Booker Arrested for Gun Possession on Capitol Grounds During Senators Overnight Speech

Senator Cory Booker from New Jersey found himself in an unusual situation just before delivering a lengthy speech on the Senate floor. His staff member, Kevin A. Batts, was arrested for carrying a firearm on Capitol grounds. This incident occurred on Monday evening, just moments before Booker began his all-night address protesting President Donald Trump’s "America First" agenda.

According to reports, Batts was taken into custody at approximately 6:29 p.m. Eastern Time as Booker prepared to start his speech around 7:00 p.m. Witnesses saw Batts being handcuffed and placed in a U.S. Capitol Police vehicle outside the Senate. The police confirmed the arrest the following day while Booker was still speaking.

The U.S. Capitol Police stated that Batts, who is a retired law enforcement officer, was escorted around security screening by a member of Congress. Later, he informed officers that he was armed. The police reiterated that all weapons are strictly prohibited on Capitol grounds, regardless of whether someone is a retired officer or holds a permit from another state or the District of Columbia. Batts was charged with carrying a pistol without a license.

This incident adds a layer of irony to Booker’s strong stance on gun control. He has been vocal about his views on the Second Amendment, often citing alarming statistics about gun violence in the U.S. As Booker continued his speech on the Senate floor, the arrest of his staff member became a notable backdrop to his message.

As the situation unfolded, it drew attention not only for the unusual circumstances but also for the implications it may have on discussions around gun laws and safety in the Capitol.
