Rep. Mikie Sherrill, a Democrat from New Jersey, has suggested the possibility of impeaching former President Donald Trump for a third time. This statement came as she campaigns to become the next governor of New Jersey. Sherrill made her comments during a campaign event at the Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company in Manchester Township on April 26.
Sherrill, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, has a history of voting for both of Trump’s impeachments during his presidency. At the event, she expressed her belief in the importance of facing multiple challenges. "I think you have to test yourself," she told supporters. Her remarks were met with laughter when an audience member urged her to "do it again," referring to her previous impeachment votes.
She reflected on her first impeachment vote, admitting she thought it might cost her her seat in Congress due to the political climate of her district. "When I impeached the president the first time — who knew I would ever be saying–" she began, before the audience member interjected.
Sherrill’s comments come amid a broader discussion among Democrats about holding Trump accountable. Recently, Rep. Shri Thanedar from Michigan introduced articles of impeachment against Trump, citing several alleged violations, including actions that undermine the justice system and disregard for court orders.
During her speech, Sherrill emphasized the need for Democratic-led states to challenge Trump’s agenda. She recalled her experience on January 6, when the Capitol was attacked, stating that Trump had no intention of stepping down. "It’s up to all of us to make sure that we are there, mobilizing, bringing people together," she said.
Sherrill is competing in a crowded Democratic primary for governor, facing candidates like Rep. Josh Gottheimer, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Current Governor Phil Murphy is term-limited, making this election particularly significant. The primary is scheduled for June 10.
As Sherrill campaigns, she aims to rally support around her vision for New Jersey while navigating the challenges posed by Trump’s influence in the political landscape.
