Putin Welcomes Chinese Foreign Minister Wang for Discussions in Moscow

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently visited Moscow, where he emphasized the strong friendship between China and Russia. During his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Wang declared that the two nations are "friends forever, never enemies." This visit is part of a three-day trip focused on strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries.

Wang expressed optimism about the potential for improved relations between the United States and Russia. He noted that the current global situation requires major powers to act as stabilizing forces. His comments came amid ongoing discussions about a possible peace settlement in Ukraine, a conflict that has been a source of tension for over three years.

The relationship between China and Russia has been characterized by a "no limits" strategic partnership, which was declared just days before Russia’s military actions in Ukraine began in February 2022. Over the past decade, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin have met more than 40 times to discuss deepening ties and collaborating on issues like Taiwan, Ukraine, and their shared concerns about the United States.

Wang stated that China is ready to play a constructive role in resolving the Ukraine conflict but will support Russia in defending its interests. He mentioned that recent ceasefire talks have yielded some positive results and should continue, even as challenges remain.

Putin expressed satisfaction with the development of Russia-China relations and mentioned preparations for Xi’s upcoming visit to Moscow for the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which commemorates the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

While China positions itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict, it has faced criticism from NATO members, who see it as a key supporter of Russia. Beijing has proposed peace principles, but these suggestions have not received significant support from the international community.

Wang’s visit underscores the ongoing collaboration between China and Russia as they navigate their roles on the global stage, particularly in light of the shifting dynamics with the United States.
