Protests Scheduled for Presidents Day: Here’s the Reason Why

Protests are set to erupt across major cities in the United States on Presidents Day, as activists mobilize under the banner of the 50501 Movement. This initiative, which stands for "50 protests. 50 states. 1 movement," aims to address what organizers perceive as the "anti-democratic and illegal actions" of the Trump administration. The upcoming demonstrations follow a previous event held on February 5, which gathered hundreds of participants across various cities.

The protests are a direct response to a series of executive orders issued by President Trump, including controversial measures associated with billionaire Elon Musk, which critics argue undermine the federal government’s role. Sydney Wilson, a local organizer in Pittsburgh and the national press liaison for the 50501 Movement, emphasized the importance of conducting protests on a day that honors U.S. presidents. "We are going out and protesting because we are concerned by our current president’s actions," Wilson stated. "We figured it was a nice little punch."

The 50501 Movement was conceived on Reddit by a user known as Evolved_Fungi in late January, quickly gaining traction on social media. The first nationwide protest on February 5, although smaller than the massive demonstrations seen after Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, still attracted significant attention, with nearly 80 protests across 88 cities. Participants voiced demands for Trump’s impeachment, called for an investigation into Musk’s role in the administration, and sought the reinstatement of rescinded Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

Looking ahead to the February 20 protests, organizers expect a turnout that could match or exceed the previous demonstration. Their demands remain focused on the removal of Elon Musk from his influential position and the strengthening of anti-discrimination legislation. Wilson highlighted ongoing concerns about the influence of non-government officials like Musk within the administration.

Support for the 50501 Movement comes from various groups, including Political Revolution, which emerged from Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. This organization, composed of activists dedicated to social justice, has positioned itself as a facilitator for the upcoming protests. They emphasize that their actions are not affiliated with any political party but are a collective call to action against perceived injustices.

The movement has garnered substantial support online, boasting over 102,000 members on its Reddit page and more than 600,000 on Discord. Additionally, the initiative has received backing from Smart Girls, an organization co-founded by actress Amy Poehler, and local Democratic lawmakers, including several Michigan state House Democrats who joined the February 5 protests.

As the nation approaches Presidents Day, the 50501 Movement’s protests are poised to capture public attention, reflecting a growing discontent with the current administration and its policies. Organizers are hopeful that the demonstrations will not only amplify their message but also mobilize a broader coalition of supporters committed to advocating for democratic principles and social justice.
