Visitors to Los Angeles County cemeteries, who were already grieving the loss of loved ones, fell victim to a series of car burglaries that left them with even more heartache. David Bassett, a 44-year-old resident of Rancho Cucamonga, has been charged with breaking into vehicles and stealing from mourners at multiple cemeteries, including Forest Lawn and Oakwood Memorial Park, over the course of a year.
According to the district attorney’s office, Bassett’s crime spree spanned from February 5, 2023, to February 25, 2024. During this time, he reportedly stole credit cards from the cars of grieving families, using them to make unauthorized charges. His actions have been described as particularly reprehensible, as they targeted individuals in their most vulnerable moments.
Bassett recently pleaded no contest to the charges against him and has been sentenced to four years in state prison. District Attorney Hochman condemned his actions, emphasizing the moral depravity of exploiting those who are mourning. "Preying on people in their most vulnerable moments — while they’re mourning and paying their respects — is beyond reprehensible," Hochman stated in a press release. He added that such exploitation would not go unpunished, warning potential offenders of the consequences.
A restitution hearing is scheduled for March 28, where the court will determine how much Bassett must compensate his victims for their losses. This case highlights a disturbing trend of crime in places intended for reflection and remembrance, raising concerns about the safety of visitors to cemeteries during times of grief.
