Pope Francis is recovering well after a serious health scare. The Vatican announced on Saturday that he is no longer in danger of death and is expected to be discharged from Gemelli Hospital on Sunday. The pope, who has been hospitalized since February 14, will bless the faithful from his hospital suite before returning to the Vatican.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the medical director at Gemelli Hospital, provided an update on the pope’s health. He reported that Francis had faced two critical episodes during his stay, but his condition has improved thanks to medication, high-flow oxygen, and mechanical ventilation. Fortunately, he was never intubated and maintained consciousness throughout his treatment.
While the pope is on the mend, he will need at least two months of rest and rehabilitation at the Vatican. Doctors advise him to avoid large gatherings and public activities during this recovery period. Alfieri explained that the pope experienced acute respiratory failure due to a polymicrobial infection, which led to pneumonia in both lungs. He spent 38 days in the hospital battling this life-threatening condition.
The pope’s hospitalization marked the longest of his papacy. He has a history of respiratory issues, including chronic lung disease and a previous lung surgery. His recent health challenges began with a bronchitis flare-up that escalated into pneumonia.
During his time in the hospital, the pope underwent several treatments, including blood transfusions, to address anemia and low blood platelets. Despite these challenges, he has stabilized and no longer requires a ventilation mask at night.
This Sunday, Francis’s public appearance will be his first since his hospitalization. His health updates have been closely followed, and many are relieved to hear of his recovery. As he prepares to return to his duties, the Vatican continues to monitor his health closely, ensuring he takes the necessary time to heal fully.
