Poll Reveals Californians View Undocumented Immigrants as Vital to Economy

A recent survey shows that a majority of California voters believe in providing social services to all low-income residents, regardless of their immigration status. This poll comes at a time when President Trump is intensifying his crackdown on unauthorized immigrants in the United States.

The survey, conducted with 800 California voters, highlights a stark contrast to the anti-immigrant messages coming from the White House. It reveals that many Californians appreciate the contributions of immigrants and recognize that their well-being is closely linked to the health of the state.

Miguel Santana, president of the California Community Foundation, which commissioned the survey, noted that Californians understand the vital role immigrants play in maintaining a good quality of life. They want to ensure that everyone has access to essential services like healthcare.

The poll found that over two-thirds of respondents support allowing all residents to buy health insurance through Covered California, regardless of immigration status. Currently, unauthorized immigrants cannot purchase plans through the state’s health insurance marketplace. Additionally, nearly 64% of those surveyed favor providing food assistance to low-income families, regardless of the parents’ immigration status.

The survey also indicated that 57% of respondents want to continue allowing all eligible low-income residents, regardless of their immigration status, to access medical care through Medi-Cal, California’s public health insurance program for the poor.

In a groundbreaking move last year, California became the first state to offer health insurance to all low-income undocumented immigrants. However, this expansion has led to rising costs for the Medi-Cal program, exceeding initial budget estimates.

David Binder Research conducted the poll by reaching out to voters through various methods, including cellphones and online surveys, between March 19 and 24. The respondents included a mix of political affiliations, with 47% identifying as Democrats and 28% as Republicans.

The findings suggest that even moderate and swing voters view undocumented immigrants as essential to California’s economy. Many expressed concerns about the potential economic impact of mass deportations, fearing that such actions would lead to higher grocery prices and harm small businesses.

Californians are worried that mass deportations could disrupt their daily lives and increase costs for families. This sentiment reflects a broader understanding in the state that immigrants play a crucial role in the economy. As of 2023, about 10.6 million California residents, or 27% of the population, were born outside the United States, the highest proportion of any state.

In contrast, national polls indicate a more supportive stance toward the Trump administration’s immigration policies. A recent CBS News/YouGov poll found that 58% of Americans approve of the administration’s efforts to deport unauthorized immigrants.

However, the California survey revealed that around 60% of voters support ensuring access to due process for all Californians, regardless of immigration status. This suggests that Californians are not swayed by the administration’s framing of deportation as a public safety measure.

Experts believe that instead of pursuing mass deportations, Californians want to integrate immigrants more fully into society. Advocates are pushing for increased funding for legal services for immigrants and better access to healthcare.

The survey results affirm that many Californians still believe in a state that supports everyone, regardless of their immigration status. This reflects a commitment to equity and the recognition of the essential contributions made by immigrants to the state’s economy and community.
