PhD Student Sentenced to Life in Prison for Rape of Women in England and China

A British judge has sentenced Zhenhao Zou, a 28-year-old Chinese PhD student, to life in prison for drugging and raping ten women. The crimes occurred between 2019 and 2023 in both England and China. Zou was found guilty of multiple offenses, including voyeurism and false imprisonment, after a four-week trial at Inner London Crown Court.

Judge Rosina Cottage described Zou as a "very bright young man" who hid his true nature behind a charming facade. She stated that he would serve a minimum of 24 years before being eligible for parole. The Metropolitan Police praised the lengthy sentence as a measure of justice for the victims and highlighted the diligent work of investigators who meticulously built the case against him.

Zou, who was studying mechanical engineering at University College London, claimed that his encounters with the women were consensual. However, police found videos on his phone showing him raping unconscious victims. His apartment contained sedatives and recording equipment, suggesting a premeditated approach to his crimes.

The police investigation revealed that Zou had committed similar offenses in China as well. As a result of the trial’s publicity, at least 24 additional women have come forward with new allegations against him. Prosecutor Saira Pike commended the bravery of the victims, stating that their testimonies were crucial in securing Zou’s conviction.

Zou used dating apps and WeChat to befriend women of Chinese heritage, inviting them for drinks before drugging them. He filmed many of the attacks, keeping a "trophy box" filled with items belonging to his victims. The prosecution team worked closely with police for over a year, analyzing a vast amount of video evidence to ensure Zou faced justice.

Commander Kevin Southworth of the Metropolitan Police expressed concern for the victims and emphasized that the investigation is still open. He encouraged anyone who may have been a victim of Zou to come forward, assuring them of a compassionate and respectful response. Police continue to seek information related to Zou’s crimes, urging potential victims to report their experiences.
