The city of Pasadena has decided to cancel swimming lessons and other recreational programs at three parks due to concerns over potential immigration enforcement by federal agents. The decision was made on Saturday after city officials observed social media posts indicating possible federal activity at Villa Parke, a park located just north of the 210 Freeway.
Lisa Derderian, a city spokesperson, explained that the cancellation was made "out of an abundance of caution." The affected parks include Villa Parke, Robinson Park, and Victory Park. The city aimed to prevent any potential conflicts that could arise from unexpected federal enforcement actions.
Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo reported that armed men dressed in tactical gear had been seen at Villa Parke earlier that day. These individuals were reportedly pursuing people near the park’s soccer field, which raised alarm among local residents and officials. Gordo expressed frustration that federal law enforcement agencies did not communicate their plans to local authorities, which could lead to dangerous situations in the community.
The mayor emphasized that the lack of coordination with local police and city officials could escalate tensions, especially when armed agents appear in public spaces. He noted that this situation has created an atmosphere of uncertainty and fear among residents.
This cancellation of programs follows a recent incident where federal agents detained individuals at a bus stop near Villa Parke. This operation sparked outrage, particularly from U.S. Representative Judy Chu, who represents the area. She criticized the aggressive tactics used by federal agents, including an instance where an agent pointed a gun at a man trying to film the agent’s vehicle.
The city’s decision to halt recreational activities reflects a broader concern about the impact of federal enforcement actions on community safety and trust. As local officials navigate this challenging situation, they are working to ensure the safety and well-being of Pasadena residents while addressing the complexities of immigration enforcement.
