Pakistan Eliminates 16 Militants as Tensions Escalate Along Afghanistan Border

Pakistan’s army reported that its forces killed 16 armed fighters along the western border with Afghanistan. This incident occurred during the night of March 22-23 in the North Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

According to an army statement, the Pakistani troops effectively engaged the fighters, thwarting their attempt to cross the border. The army emphasized its commitment to securing the borders and combating terrorism within the country.

This clash comes at a time when Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Sadiq Khan, is visiting Kabul to discuss bilateral and economic issues. This visit highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts between the two nations, despite rising tensions.

Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have deteriorated over the past few years. Islamabad has repeatedly criticized the Afghan Taliban for not controlling the activities of the Pakistan Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). This group, which emerged in 2007, has been responsible for numerous attacks against Pakistani security forces. In 2024 alone, Pakistan has experienced over 500 attacks, resulting in more than 1,500 deaths among civilians and law enforcement.

The TTP is allied with the Afghan Taliban, who regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021. Pakistan accuses the Afghan government of providing shelter to TTP members, a claim that the Afghan Taliban denies.

The recent military action underscores the ongoing security challenges along the border and the complexities of Pakistan’s relationship with its neighbor.
